An independent Jewish broadsheet
UJF Pittsburgh covers Jewish news, rights, culture, diaspora, and history — independently, with a Pittsburgh dateline and an eye on the wider world.
We are not the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh. We are not a synagogue. We are not part of any denominational body, political party, or membership organization. We are a small, independent magazine — staffed by writers who live in or have ties to the Pittsburgh Jewish community and who think the community deserves serious reporting that doesn’t flatter anyone, including itself.
What we cover
Five departments: News, Culture, Rights, Diaspora, and History. News is reporting on community institutions and current events. Culture is books, theatre, music, and language. Rights is civil rights, antisemitism, hostage advocacy, and religious liberty. Diaspora is communities outside Israel — from Los Angeles Persian Jewry to Vilnius. History is the Rauh archives and the long memory of how Pittsburgh got here.
Editorial standards
We name sources. We disclose financial relationships. We don’t accept communal advertising in exchange for coverage. Corrections are made transparently and dated. When we’re wrong, we say so above the fold.
